SCHOOL NURSE ASSISTANT

 

REPORTS TO:

DIRECTOR OF STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or State Registered Nurse Aide (SRNA) certificate, CPR Certified, valid Kentucky driver's license

                                                                               

JOB FUNCTION:   

To assist school nurse with administering first aid according to established procedures; conduct a variety of health screenings; prepare and maintain accurate student medical records.

  

 

DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Assist school nurse in administering first aid or nursing care for accidents, seizures, preventive medicine, and other educational-related medical problems; provide CPR and first aid to school employees, as needed
  • Support school nurse in conducting height, weight, vision, hearing, scoliosis, and other health screenings as required; provide screening for head lice and observe students regularly to detect health needs
  • Maintain health records and medical logs; support school nurse in updating immunization and student records, as needed; prepare and submit periodical medical reports for appropriate organizations or district personnel and assure compliance with established laws and regulations
  • Assist school nurse in communicating with various community health agencies and civic organizations to exchange information, coordinate activities, and obtain student needs such as medication, glasses, hearing aids, and clothing, as needed
  • Assist school nurse in conducting training for students, parents, and school staff, as required
  • Provide information and make recommendations to principals, substitutes, teachers, and parents regarding health issues of students and school health program needs, develop programs to meet school health needs
  • Participate in screening for health defects and sanitary conditions in schools
  • Maintain current knowledge of medical advances and information, public health issues, and treatment procedures
  • Coordinate care and student emergency action plans related to diabetes, seizures, asthma, allergies, and the use of emergency medications i.e. Epi-Pen, Glucagon, and Diastat as directed by the school nurse
  • Support the Registered Nurse in developing an Individual Health Plan (IHP) for children with chronic disease
  • Assist with the development of school emergency response plans for emergencies and disasters and the training of staff to respond appropriately within applicable state laws
  • Work under the delegation of the registered nurse
  • Perform related duties, as assigned

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Complete all mandatory training and attend in-service sessions
  • Performs assigned tasks promptly
  • Consistently displays self-control with parents, students, and school personnel
  • Maintains a clean workstation (desk, office, etc.)
  • Be clean, neat, and appropriately/professionally dressed
  • Maintains student control
  • Operate equipment in a safe manner
  • Be consistently responsible with regular punctual attendance and timely completion of assigned duties, working assigned contract and extended days, and using sick and personal leave appropriately
